My eyes widen as I watch Alandra point her finger at the girl before storming off.

“It’s Merry Christmas for humans!” she screams, stomping her feet. Her blue and pink hair has me narrowing my eyes. This is the girl from Alandra’s dreamscape.

The cruel one.

As I move to follow the Little Witch, the human steps in front of me, narrowing her eyes. My eyebrow arches and I glance around at the people moving past us on the sidewalk. A few had been interested while I was healing the old woman, but it seemed their fascination stopped as soon as the magic did.

How typical.

“Can I help you?” I ask when she doesn’t speak.

“Yeah. Who the fuck are you?”

My eyebrows shoot into my hairline and it takes every ounce of patience I’ve cultivated over the eons not to fling this mortal into traffic for speaking to me in such a way.

“I’m Luna. And you are?”

“Jess.” She bites her bottom lip, tears welling in her light brown eyes. “How do you know Landra?”

“Alandra? We . . . just met.” My eyes flick away from this Jess and down the sidewalk where Alandra is quickly moving out of my sight.

“I—I miss her,” she whispers quietly. “I’m sorry for being rude.” Her candor shocks me and I turn to face the thin woman with a nod.

“I understand. Relationships are messy and hard. I don’t have much experience with them myself, but—” I shake my head. I’m saying too much. I don’t want to give myself away to this mortal. A quote that drifted to me in my own realm drifts across my mind now and I smile sadly at the girl. “Sometimes, things just aren’t meant to be.”

“I hope you two are happy.” She wipes at her eyes and turns away from me, walking down the street with her head hung low.

I want to correct her, tell her that me and the Little Witch aren’t in a relationship. I want to set the facts straight and be honest with the human, but something in my chest won’t let me.

No, something in my chest is urging me, even now, to turn around and follow Alandra to make sure she’s safe. To go wrap my arms around her and hold her so tightly that all of her broken pieces fit back together.

And that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I cast one last look at the human walking off into the distance before I turn to look for my Little Witch. I don’t know what I can offer her. I know I can’t stay in this realm forever, even when the magic keeping me here wears off with the solstice, and I have a choice in the matter again. I’ll have to return to my own realm.

My eyes drift over the heads of people in front of me, searching out the platinum haired witch I’m looking for. I think I see her disappear around a corner when a hand comes down on my wrist.

I look first at the hand that dares to touch me, then my eyes raise up to the face attached to such a stupid limb.
